  1. 1.1 Chemistry • Objective 1: • Define Chemistry and differentiate among its traditional divisions • Objective 2: • Decide why it is important to study Chemistry • Objective 3: • Summarize ways in which Chemistry affect your daily life and the impact it has on various science fields.

  2. What is Chemistry? • Definition: The study of the composition of matter, and the changes (transformations) it undergoes. • Chem from Egyptian word keme which means “earth” • Grew from human curiosity with the world. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-3DEFwHEzs

  3. Five Branches of Chemistry • Organic Chemistry – carbon containing substances. • Inorganic Chemistry- non-carbon containing substances. • Analytical Chemistry – the composition of substances. • Physical Chemistry – describing the behavior of substances. • Biochemistry – study of living substances.

  4. Why Study Chemistry? • Chemistry is everywhere and makes up everything. • You breathe chemicals, you drink chemicals, you wash in chemicals, you eat chemicals, you think using chemicals, you taste chemicals, you smell chemicals, you move using chemicals. • You should know something about the technologies that are used in the world. • You should know about the foods you eat, and the chemicals that affect your health. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbfW_CMMe48&feature=related

  5. Checkpoint • What is Chemistry and why is it valuable to us?

  6. Materials • Metals: gold, silver, platinum, brass, bronze, stainless steel, iron, nickel, copper, aluminum… • Crystals: diamonds, glass, ice, sugar, marble, quartz… • Plastics: PVC, teflon, nylon, styrofoam, polyester… • Liquids: water, alcohol, oils, paints… • Gases: air, helium, neon, argon… • Solids: wood, stone, sand, ceramics… • Natural Fibers: wool, cotton, hemp…

  7. Energy • Sources: Electricity, petroleum, coal, wood, wind, hydroelectric, nuclear, batteries, solar, photosynthesis, natural gas (methane), human (bicycles)…

  8. Medicine and Biotechnology • Health Products: vitamins, growth hormones, drug delivery systems, high blood pressure medicine, cloning… • Disease Control: antibiotics, diabetes, cancer, AIDS (HIV)… • Plant Biotech: Genetic engineering, pest resistance, frost resistance, plant hormones, root generation… • Biomedical: artificial heart, kidney machines, joint replacement, synthetic skin…

  9. Who do you picture using Chemistry?

  11. Science Careers • Have you ever thought about a career in science? • How might science impact you even if you do not choose a career in science?

  12. Group Activity • Write 3 words that come to mind when you think of the Scientific Method. • Pair-up and choose 3 words among the group that seem to be most important. • Now as a large group (class) filter your choices down to three final words that are associated with the Scientific Method.

  13. 1.3 Thinking Like a Scientist • Objective 1: • Describe the steps involved in the scientific method.

  14. 2. HYPOTHESIS 1. OBSERVATION 3. EXPERIMENTS 4. THEORY The Scientific Method • 1. Use senses to obtain information • 2. Proposed Explanation • 3. Test your hypothesis • 4. Extensively tested explanation of why experiment works.

  15. HOMEWORK • Chapter 1 Review p. 25; 16-28 all.

  16. The Scientific Method Extensively Tested Explanation of why Exp works Document your Theory Theory
