Manifest Destiny • As the debate over whether to admit Texas to the Union was going on in Congress, an article appeared in an expansionist magazine claiming: “[Westward expansion is] the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions”
