The Amazing Liver The liver is the “biochemical mastermind” of the body The Chinese say the liver “harmonizes” the function of all other organs of the body Liver health is extremely important to overall health
Filter for the Digestive Tract The hepatic portal vein carries blood from the gastrointestinal tract and spleen to the liver There it breaks down into a second bed of capillaries where nutrients are processed and toxins are filtered out This allows the liver to process nutrients and toxins from the digestive tract Illustration from 123rf.com
Your Body’s Three Lines of Immune Defense First: The mucus membranes of the digestive (and respiratory) passages are your body’s primary line of immune defense Second: All blood from the digestive tract is sent to the liver via the hepatic vein, making the liver the second line of immune defense. This allows the liver to process nutrients, filter toxins and send some toxins back to the digestive tract via the bile
Your Body’s Three Lines of Immune Defense Third: Toxins getting past the liver into the blood cause glandular activity to increase to push toxins out of the body, making the glands the third line of defense
The Body’s Warehouse The liver is able to remove nutrients absorbed from the digestive tract and store them for later use It stores nutrients such as vitamin A, B-12, D, E and K and various minerals It also buggers the blood sugar by storing excess glucose as glycogen or fat It also stores extra blood to be released as needed.
Fat Regulator Creates bile which digests fats and helps the body absorb fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) Converts essential fatty acids such as GLA, EPA, and DHA into the lipoprotein forms (cholesterol) necessary to allow transport via the bloodstream
Cholesterol Balancer Makes lipoproteins (cholesterol) to transport fats through the body • LDL takes fats to the tissues • HDL brings fats back to the liver Eliminates excess cholesterol by using it to make bile (more than 50% of the body’s cholesterol is used for this purpose)
Protein Metabolism The liver processes proteins, converting amino acids into other amino acids the body needs It constructs blood proteins and other protein compounds needed by the body It manufactures carnitine from lysine. Carnitinemoves fats into the mitochondria where they are used to generate energy.
Quality Control Lab The liver filters the blood from the intestines and general circulation and helps remove harmful chemicals and bacteria It breaks down ammonia (and other toxins) created in the colon by bacteria It helps prevent harmful substances from the colon from entering the general circulation
Chemical Factory Just about every nutrient must be converted into its proper biochemical form by the liver to be stored, transported and used by cells The liver produces thousands of enzymes that assist in building up or breaking down various chemicals the body needs to maintain health Activates B vitamins into their biologically active coenzyme forms
Thyroid Assistance The Liver converts the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) into it more active form triiodothyronine (T3) Inadequate conversion may lead to hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue, weight gain, poor memory and other debilitating conditions
Reproductive Hormones Breaks down excess estrogens and other reproductive hormones to keep hormones balanced Helps maintain hormonal balance during a woman’s reproductive cycle to keep health and mood stable
Lactic Acid Processing Lactic acid is produced when glucose is metabolized High levels of lactic acid make muscles sore Liver extracts lactic acid from the bloodstream and converts it to glycogen
The Liver and Blood Sugar The liver creates GTF (Glucose Tolerance Factor) from chromium, niacin and possibly glutathione, which is needed for the hormone insulin to properly regulate blood-sugar levels
The Liver and Blood Sugar It serves as the main glucose buffer, preventing high or low extremes of blood sugar • When blood sugar is high, the liver converts excess sugar to glycogen or fat under the influence of insulin • When blood sugar levels are low, the liver releases stored glycogen under the influence of glucagon
The Liver and Blood Sugar If the liver does not break down insulin fast enough, hypoglycemia results because the circulating insulin continues to lower blood sugar
Waste Processing Facility Main poison-detoxifying organ in the body The liver must break down every substance toxic to the body including metabolic wastes, insecticide and pesticide residues, drugs, alcohol, etc. It also breaks down and eliminates excess hormones, neurotransmitters and damaged red blood cells
Liver Stagnation Congestion in the liver can cause a build up of congestion in the inferior vena cava This creates problems in the entire venous circulation in the lower half of the body, which can compromise valve function Illustration from 123rf.com
Signs of a Congested, Overworked Liver • Difficulty relaxing in the evening • Groggy feeling in the morning • Stuffy, bloated abdomen • No obvious diseases, but you just don’t feel well • Brain fog • Feeling anxious or irritable

3 Major Liver Detox Pathways Glutathione conjugation • Helps eliminate environmental toxins and heavy metals Methylation • Breaks down excess neurotransmitters, hormones and homocysteine Sulfation • Breaks down excess neurotransmitters and environmental toxins
Glutathione Conjugation Nutrients • N-Acetyl-Cysteine • Indole-3-Carbinol • Alpha lipoic acid • Vitamin C • Cruciferous vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, etc.)
Methylation Nutrients • Sam-e • B vitamins • Vitamin B6 • Vitamin B12 • Folic Acid • Choline • Magnesium • Zinc
Sulfation Nutrients Sulfur-rich veggies • Broccoli, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, turnips, etc. • Garlic and onions B vitamins • Vitamin B1 • Vitamin B2 • Vitamin B12 Magnesium Zinc N-Acetylcysteine
Thai-Go Sour fruits are said to tonify the liver chi in Chinese herbalism Many of the antioxidant fruits in Thai-Go are used in Chinese herbalism for liver and eye support Thai-Go is an excellent liver supporting supplement
Milk Thistle Combination Contains milk thistle andN-Acetyl-Cysteine which aid liver detoxification pathways Helps detoxify
Liver Balance Chinese formula for “constricted liver qi” or liver stagnation Supports liver detoxification Traditional Chinese name Tiao He means “mediate harmony” because it is supposed to help all the organs work together better
Red Yeast Rice Red yeast rice is a natural byproduct of fermented red rice containing ten mevinic acids Also contains sterols, including beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and sapogenin; isoflavones and isoflavone glycosides; and monounsaturated fatty acids Acts on liver pathways to help maintain cholesterol levels already in the normal range
