  2. 8-18-09 cont’d  Hand out General Class Outline, Objectives & Expectations with Semester Schedule • Discuss skills we’ll focus on • speech, literary analysis, writing process • Discuss General Daily Schedule • Journaling • Every day as your bell ringer activity • Once a week you will revise/edit your chosen entry for grading • Hand out and go over journal rubric We didn’t get to view this PowerPoint because of technical difficulties, but the same information was covered

  3. 08-18-09 cont’d • Speaker of the Day • Starting 8/31, pairs for the first round • Will be responsible for daily Non-Fiction Reading of Current Events • Bring either hard paper or be ready with on-line paper • Paraphrase a few current events for the class & facilitate discussion • Hand out and go over SOTD rubric Speaker of the Day will also do the daily research for “language connections” that will be inserted here during class discussion – things like looking up words we don’t know or finding pictures of words or concepts that are unfamiliar We did not hand out the SOTD rubric – we’ll do that later next week

  4. 08-18-09 cont’d • These daily notes • Cornell Method variation with Language Connections made during class discussions • Will be posted on Eng 303 Wiki This is where we’ll insert our “language connections” during our class discussions. You can write your own “language connections” on your own notes that you should be taking I hope to post these notes at least weekly to the wiki site.

  5. 08-18-09 cont’d • Discuss class participation • Why are we here at AHS? Atlantic? USA? What is our purpose? • Discuss daily participation points • Employability • Begins at bell with attendance & will be recorded daily • How are participation points deduced? • Absences, tardies, misbehavior, not handing in assignments… Your participation points (employability grade) each week will be roughly equal to one assignment per week and are your easiest points. Please do what is expected of you so I can award full points on this weekly grade.

  6. 08-18-09 cont’d • Discuss late work • Shows effort • Oral/written confirmation of when due (3 days after absence) with students/parents • Part of integrity In trying to be fair and grade with integrity, I will stick to the late work policy with everyone.
