Some notes on the Spanish alphabet… • In English, sometimes vowels take on different pronunciations • Pronounce the following words: • naked, baked • water, later • roaring, pouring • In Spanish, 99.99999999% of the time, vowels keep the same pronunciation, making it very easy to pronounce the word if you know how each letter is pronounced
Changes to alphabet • In 1994, the Spanish Academy (essentially a grammar and vocabulary police in Spain) decided that “ch” and “ll” weren’t letters. They were designated sounds instead. • Therefore, newer dictionaries don’t have sections for “ch” and “ll.” Older dictionaries will have separate sections.
