What are the advantages of involving parents in school settings? • Children with parents who are involved tend to have: • HIGH ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE • GREATER ACHIEVEMENT • MORE POSITIVE ATTITUDES TOWARDS SCHOOL • LOWER DROP-OUT RATES • PARENTS WHO FEEL LIKE THEY CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY BEING INVOLVED.

  5. PARENTS’ EFFECT ON LITERACY • Read the following scenario: • On a home visit you see how Dad and his six month old daughter hold a conversation. Molly coos and babblesand Dad Imitates her. Mom tells Dad to stop “mocking” Molly. She says he should be respectful of her. She says that no baby talking to Molly is the rule. • This hushing of Dad was certainly NOT what you had in mind

  7. Assignment • Create at least a one-half page personal philosophy of what you believe about families and your work as a teacher in early childhood education.
