Dr. Kenneth J. Reid, Director of Engineering Education Ohio Northern University Addressing Entrepreneurial Mindset Learning Outcomes in the First Year
First Year Engineering Sequence • Teaming • Criteria & Constraints • Intro to Engineering 1 (ENGR1041) • Small projects • Tech communication • Design process • Intro to Engineering 2 (ENGR1051) • Cornerstone design project • Given a country, design a device to help alleviate some effect of poverty
Entrepreneurial Mindset A student should be able to: • Effectively collaborate in a team setting • Apply critical & creative thinking to ambiguous problems • Construct & effectively communicate a customer-appropriate value proposition • Persist through and learn from failure. • Effectively manage projects through appropriate commercialization or final delivery process. • Demonstrate voluntary social responsibility. • Relate personal liberties and free enterprise to entrepreneurship.
Effectively collaborate in a team setting • Teams are formed “randomly” in Intro to Engr 1 • Effective teaming covered in Intro to Engr 1 • Teams formed using CATME in Engr (www.catme.org)
Apply critical & creative thinking to ambiguous problems • Construct & effectively communicate a customer-appropriate value proposition • Effectively manage projects through appropriate commercialization or final delivery process. • Engineering Design process applied to multiple designs • Poverty Alleviating cornerstone project http://rube.asq.org/edu/2012/03/continuous-improvement/qed-news-spring-2012.pdf
Project demonstrations Manual pump To replace non-functioning electrical pumps Trash to Briquette Maker Shredded trash smashed & dried to form cooking fuel Water collection & irrigation Scale model, irrigation and livestock watering
Demonstrate voluntary social responsibility • Relate personal liberties and free enterprise to entrepreneurship. • Northern Engineering Without Boundaries
Persist through and learn from failure. • Adding an initial presentation and demonstration • Allows for feedback, design modification New
