JJ Thomson Dane Carman Matt Bielasiak Vincent Comanda’
Background Information Born in Manchester, England. Lived from 1856-1940 Enrolled in Owens College in 1870, and in 1876 entered Trinity College, in Cambridge. He remained a member of the college for the remainder of his life.
Contribution First and foremost, he designed the first cathode ray tube, which led to the discovery of the electron. (cathode rays are beams of electrons that travel through vacuum tubes) This observation also allowed him to measure the mass of the electrons by using the heat they produced.
Experiment Details He concluded from this that the particles were in fact negatively charged, and that they also were 1000 times smaller than the atom. Thomson used these cathode rays and found that the speed at which they were travelling was faster than an atomically-sized particle would travel.
Conclusion • The findings with his cathode rays helped JJ Thomson discover the electron in the atom.
