  2. Introduction • There are seven major lighthouses in North Carolina and three other lighthouses. • Some of these lighthouses are still in use while others are historical sites.

  3. What role do lighthouses play? • Lighthouses have traditionally assisted ships traveling along the coast at night to find their way. • Lighthouses have also assisted lost travelers in finding their way to shore.

  4. What do we want to learn? • Where are the lighthouses? • How tall are these lighthouses? • Why are these lighthouses special or unique? • When were these lighthouses built? • Why visit these lighthouses?

  5. Where are these lighthouses? • Lighthouses are located along a coast or large body of water. North Carolina’s lighthouses are located along the Outer Banks. • These lighthouses are sometimes the only draw for the town or city and others are only one among other attractions

  6. How tall are these lighthouses? • These lighthouses are all the “tall” type not shaped like actual houses. • They range in height from 76 feet to 225 feet tall. • Is there a reason they are this tall?

  7. What makes these lighthouses unique? • One of these lighthouses has been relocated. Why? • One of these lighthouses has a design that most people misinterpret. Why? • Many lighthouses have a unique design. Does yours?

  8. When were these lighthouses built? • Were they built for a specific purpose? • Were they around during the days of the pirate? • How much did they cost?

  9. Why visit these lighthouses? • Would I want to visit these lighthouses for any reason besides history? • How far are other attractions? • How do I reach these lighthouses? Can I drive or must I take a Ferry?
