John Hope Franklin “Ethnicity in American Life: The Historical Perspective” • Main Point: Ethnic exclusionism is very entrenched and has a long history in the U.S. • The U.S. is the most diverse society in the world • “Americanization” always was based on the norm of WASP [assimilation] • Most other groups were gradually admitted – placed on “ethnic probation” • except African-Americans • discrimination has been based on nationality, religion, language, and especially “race” • Older immigrants have joined in discrimination against newer ones • This harmed them too, in the long run – they have not been fully accepted, and have helped reinforce the idea of a hierarchy
