DRIVER Building a worldwide scientific data repository infrastructure in support of scholarly communication Dale Peters, Scientific Technical Manager Göttingen State and University Library JISC/CNI Conference, Belfast, 10-11 July 2008
Vision • European and worldwide research output (publications and data sets ) is openly accessible through institutional repositories • Interoperability ensures the automated aggregation of all scholarly research output into one virtual open knowledge base • Open content enables service providers to provide a wide range of end-user services to researchers (search, browse, profiling, visualisation, citation, impact metrics…) • API’s enable the linking and interaction of publications with any type of digital data and objects (e.g. primary data, films, language recordings, learning courses, digital artefacts etc.)
DRIVER II Confederation Open Source Software for repository networks • Organization of Digital • Repository Infrastructure Providers D-NET DR Infrastructure • Technical Digital Repository • Network Infrastructure Services DRIVER Portal & Wiki • Community Building • & Maintenance
User community DRIVER infrastructure supports three groups of users: • The repository manager • The service provider • The e-research community
Interoperability • Policy formulation • Confederation • Guidelines • Data conformity • Repository services • Registration, aggregation, domain-specific • Robust technical infrastructure • Tools and services
DRIVER Guidelines • http://www.driver-support.eu
Guidelines • Objectives • Policy development • Improved services • Additional functionality • Check conformance • Validation • Components • Collections (sets) • DC Metadata • OAI - PMH • OAI - ORE
Work in Progress • Improvement: full-text access • Enhanced publications • Metadata Expert Group • dynamic, voluntary, wiki • Standards & interoperability in IRs • aggregator‘s perspective e.g. BASE • lightweight • Support, certification
Register your Repository • DRIVER Guidelines compliance • Validation • Harvest
Technical infrastructure D-NET v.1.0 released under the Open Source Apache License on the 20 June 2008 DRIVER Network Evolution Toolkit includes: • Repository network administration software (such as the Repository Network Manager, Resource Monitoring) • End-user services (Search, Browse, Profiling) • Support service to local repository managers and aggregators (Validation Tool) LIBER Annual Conference, 2008, Istanbul
Challenges • Local interpretation • Access to full text • Persistent identifiers • National aggregators • Long term preservation • Technical support
Conclusion • Interoperability key to Open Access • Robust technical infrastructure • Improved services to repository community • Guidelines • Policy development
