For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. (Hebrews 4:15, ESV)
Why Was Jesus Baptized? • Not for the same reason as other people were • To “fulfill all righteousness” When all the people heard this, and the tax collectors too, they declared God just, having been baptized with the baptism of John, but the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God for themselves, not having been baptized by him.) Luke 7:29-30 ESV God’s “purpose” was for them to be baptized

This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him, but for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John bore witness:“I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” (John 1:29-34, ESV)

(Acts 2:38, ESV) And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name.’ (Acts 22:16, ESV)
Does Jesus’ Baptism Explain Christian Baptism? • Shows that baptism has nothing to do with remission? • Shows baptism is just a public proclamation of faith? 1. Acts 8:35ff- Phillip and the treasurer 2. Acts 16:25ff- The Philippian jailer
Does Jesus’ Baptism Explain Christian Baptism? • Shows that baptism has nothing to do with remission? • Shows baptism is just a public proclamation of faith? • Shows baptism is just outward sign of inward grace?
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. (Romans 6:3-6, ESV)
Does Jesus’ Baptism Explain Christian Baptism? • Shows that baptism has nothing to do with remission? • Shows baptism is just a public proclamation of faith? • Shows baptism is just outward sign of inward grace? • NO BIBLICAL WRITER EVER SUGGESTS WE ARE BAPTIZED LIKE JESUS WAS.
The Baptism of Jesus… • Introduced him to John and to Israel • Demonstrated his desire to “fulfill all righteousness” • Visually and audibly confirmed Him as Messiah • Was NOT for the same reason we are baptized • Set an example in obedience
