  2. Reasons for needing a cooperative or consolidation • Decreased enrollment • Small community size • Decreased population in community • Aging population of community • Budget cuts

  3. Schools need to look at: • The need • The advantages • The disadvantages

  4. Impact of Nebraska Legislature • Budget cut of $334 million • Results in a huge impact on rural areas in NE • Senator Russ Karpisek said, “Some schools have already taken pretty dramatic cuts. All they can do is look at consolidation, raising taxes, or cutting programs.”

  5. Cooperatives • Also known as a co-op • Newer idea that is implemented into school districts • Generally formed to: 1. Maintain extracurricular activities 2. Share expenses of faculty and staff • Step to gradually move schools closer together before the inevitable consolidation

  6. Benefits/Advantages of a Co-op or Consolidation • Increased student enrollment • Save schools from closing • Generally an increased amount of extracurricular skills possessed by students • Development of relationships between students of merging schools • Saving money in times of budget cuts

Disadvantages of a co-op or consolidation • Requires a lot of money to transform to new name and school colors • Students feeling as if they lost a piece of their identity • Attitudes of jealousy or rivalry from community and students • Possibility of eliminating jobs for faculty and staff • Differences between rules and handbooks

  8. Conclusion • Co-ops and consolidations can eliminate some problems • However, when schools merge it can also cause problems for both communities and students • Important for administrators to remember that students come first and it is important to provide a stable environment that students can learn in, no matter how many schools are combined
