The Water Cycle Micah Townsley
Today’s Objectives • You will be able to sketch and label the water cycle • You will be able to explain the processes in the water cycle • You will be able to explain how pollution affects the water cycle
Definition • 1. Nature’s Water Cycle: • The never-ending circulation of the earth’s water as it makes its long journey from the oceans, to the air, to the land, and back to the oceans again
condensation evaporation precipitation
More Definitions*use your dictionary or glossary* 2. Condensation 3. Evaporation 4. Precipitation
Evaporation Condensation • The sun’s heat causes evaporation • The result is invisible water vapor • Which cools and condenses forming clouds
Condensation Precipitation • Clouds cool even more, causing precipitation in the form of rain, sleet, snow • Precipitation ends up in bodies of water which evaporate • Bonus: What are the different forms of water?
Water only changes from one form to another and moves from one place to another • What does this tell us about the earth’s water? • There is as much water on earth today as there ever was
Pollution and the Water Cycle • Define: 5.pollution • Think about how pollution affects the water cycle. • Water pollution • Air pollution • Land pollution What does this mean to you and me?
Reduce Pollution REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE
How much water is on the earth? There are about 326 million cubic miles of water. There are over a million gallons of water per cubic mile. How much of the earth’s water is fresh? Only about 3% of the earth’s water is fresh. About 75% of the earth’s fresh water is frozen in ice caps and glaciers. Some Cool Water Facts • How much water do living things contain? • -All living things consist mostly of water. Humans are 60% water. • How much water does a person use every day? • -On average, each person in the United States uses more than 100 gallons of water a day in the home. • What is the largest single use of water? • -The largest single use of water is by industry. It takes about 80 gallons of water to make the paper for one Sunday newspaper. • Can water ever be used up? • -Water is used and reused over and over again—it is never used up. Every glass of water you drink contains molecules of water that have been used countless times before.
Review • Draw and label the water cycle (remember to name your diagram). • Describe how precipitation, condensation, and evaporation make the water cycle. • Tell how you can reduce pollution in the water cycle.
