Background • President Eisenhower approved program in March 1960 • CIA set up training camps in Guatemala • José Miró Cardona • Goal: Overthrow Castro and establish a non-communist government
The Plan • Two air strikes • 1,400 man force + a smaller force • The plan depended on the Cuban population joining the invaders
The invasion • April 15, 1961; eight bombers left Nicaragua • Unsuccessful bombings • Many mistakes were made by exiles
The Counterattack • 20,000 Cuban troops • Some exiles escaped • Almost 1,200 surrendered and more than 100 were killed
The aftermath • Prisoners remained for 20 months • Castro eventually settled • Operation Mongoose
