From Text to Literacy Digital Literacy experience By: Peter Gil
The Pager The day my father brought home the pager revolutionized my whole outlook on communication. Before that I would use the house phone or write a letter in order to communicate. I enjoyed writing letters before the pager. Yet with the invention of the pager I no longer saw the need for letters because you can easily send your friend or whoever a quick message and instantly be talking. From then on I would not write a letter to a friend or anyone else. http://www.pwservice.us/cp/ProdImages/advisor_ii_holster_big.jpg
Can You hear me now? If it wasn’t enough that I just recently got into 2-way messaging with the pager then came the cell phone. The only problem was that the phone was too big to use. This was the first time I ever need to read the instructions with a product. I realized that there was a lot to this simple cell phone. From then on I understood the importance of reading all the instructions and the warranty, seeing how my father dropped it the second day and called the warranty in order to get it replaced until I explained to him that the warranty wouldn’t cover it. Long story short, It is important to read and know what the warranty will cover. http://blogs.riverfronttimes.com/dailyrft/BigNokiaCellPhone%281%29.jpg
The Matrix Phone Neo receives a package and it is Morpheus was on the other end of the call. Probably the coolest phone ever at that time but the movie was confusing. The only parts of the movie that was good were the action scenes which lead me to purchase a book that explained the movie. Before then I didn’t know that your local Barnes and nobles store had books of recent released movies. From then on if any movie sparked my interest as much as The Matrix I could read further in and really understand the movie. http://www.intomobile.com/images/nokia8110_03.jpg
My First Phone Finally my first cell phone. It was the 6th grade and it was from a little company called Metro PCS. If I didn’t know my alphabet I would come to memorize it because of the text feature. Teachers in middle school aren’t as cell phone friendly as college professors. For that reason I developed a skill that allowed me to text right from my pocket. I would compose text messages to my friends that sat across the classroom. From then on “texting” completely replaced written messages in the classroom. http://www.portablegadget.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/old_cellphone2.jpg
“I’ll Text you” By 8th grade simple face to face conversations were no longer accepted. If you didn’t have a cell phone will “unlimited” text messaging then you might as well not be able to communicate. Whether it be your friend across the city or your friend in the next classroom, the only means of communication was text. This created a whole new manner in which people communicated. We could no longer spell out every word to each other. So in 8th grade I learned the most important branch of English, “text words”. http://nds3.nokia.com/pressphotos/public/global/devices/6170/l_6170_04.jpg
Internet on the go If texting wasn’t enough to completely replace face to face communication, then MySpace sure would. It wasn’t enough that your phone had the texting feature it now needed internet so that you could message and check up if anyone has posted a comment on your profile. This lead to a lot more writing. The instant messaging, comments, and email had brought me to develop quick thumbs. I could write a whole email in a matter of minutes because of this full keyboard. http://www.wirefly.com/images/phones/LG_vx9800_verizon_z4.jpg
The IPhone The IPhone completely changed my life. With all the features it included I would no longer need anything else. If I needed to search something it was an easy type and search. If I wanted to get a head start on an essay or some writing assignment I just pulled out my IPhone and began to type it on the bus ride home. Emails, text, Facebook, and any other feature was available on the phone. http://ii.alatest.com/product/600x400/4/6/APPLE-IPHONE-3G-S-16-GO-NOIR-0.jpg
The Ultimate Mobile Device Once I entered College it was necessary for me to get a laptop. Now writing an essay was easer than ever. No longer was I restricted to my desk, I could type on my bed or literally anywhere I wanted. Anything that the internet had was now a simple search away. Which lead to stumbleupon.com, that caused me to spend hours just reading and watching countless things that the internet contains. I can’t even start to think of how many things I have read or seen. Literature became only a simple stumble away. http://www.macbookproreview.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/macbook-pro11-300x221.jpg
