Nested Modeling Studies on the Northeast U.S. Continental Shelves Dale B. Haidvogel John Wilkin, Katja Fennel, Hernan Arango, Paul Goodman Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences Rutgers University With support from NSF, ONR, NASA, NOPP, USGS
Outline • Regional circulation and science issues • Computational approaches • Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) • Nested applications: • NATL (North Atlantic Basin) • NENA (North Eastern North Atlantic) • NEOS (North Eastern Observatory System) • LATTE (LAgrangian Transport and Transformation Experiment) • Where do we go next?
Under development for ROMS • Wetting and drying capabilities • Sediment submodel • Sea ice dynamics • Framework (ESMF) • Web-based dynamic documentation • Web-based test problem suite • Coupling with WRF atmospheric model http://marine.rutgers.edu/po/models/roms/index.php
Tangent Linear and Adjoint Models • Sensitivity analysis • Singular vectors (optimal perturbations) • Pseudospectra • Eigenmodes and adjoint eigenmodes • Forcing singular vectors • Stochastic optimals • Parameter estimation • Ensemble prediction • Variational data assimilation (e.g., 4DVAR)
Nested Applications on the NE Shelves • Coastal upwelling and associated in-water optical properties (NY/NJ Bight, NENA) • Seasonal and interannual variability in ocean carbon flux, transport, and burial (NENA) • Air-sea heat and momentum transfer and boundary layer dynamics (CBLAST) • Transport of nutrients and contaminants in the Hudson River plume (LATTE) • Prediction and state estimation (NEOS)

North Atlantic Basin Simulation (NATL) • Resolution: 1/10 deg. Grid is 1000x1000x30; • Disk space for input datasets: 15.7 Gb • Monthly climatology (12 records 250 Mb each) • Wind forcing (7 years of daily records 4.8 Mb each) • Surface fluxes (12 records 32 Mb each) • Disk space for model output: 280 Gb • 3 day averages for 7 years (854 records 325 Mb each) • Simulation runs on 32 processors of SGI Origin 3000 • Total memory 11 Gb • One day of simulation take 46 CPU hours • Wall clock time to run 7 years of simulation: 153 days.
US East Coast (NENA) • 10 km resolution (192x64x30) • Initialized for North Atlantic Basin Simulation • NCEP daily winds • COADS monthly heat fluxes with imposed daily shortwave radiation cycle. • One-way nesting • Boundary conditions from 3-day averages • Flather/Chapman OBC for 2D momentum • Clamped OBC for 3D momentum and tracers • Rivers • Fasham-type biology model
Northeast North Atlantic (NENA) embedded within NATL 3-day average open boundary values from NATL7-component NPZD ecosystem Temperature Chlorophyll
CO2 flux (mol m-2 yr-1) • Air-sea CO2-flux: • simulated (top, right) • observed (bottom, right; Boehme et al., Mar. Chem. 1998) Day of year
Observational estimates of mean annual shelf primary production: • LEO15: 715 gC m-2 y-1 (MacDonald 1983) • NY Bight: 290 gC m-2 y-1 • (Malone et al. 1983) • G.o.Maine to Cape Hatteras: • 310 gC m-2 y-1 • (O’Reilly and Busch 1984) • Southern MAB: 620 gC m-2 y-1 (Lohrenz et al. 2002)
NENA NATL NENA / NATL COUPLING Temperature at 100 m (One-month after initialization)
NEOS NENA NEOS / NENA COUPLING Surface Salinity (Initialization 01-Jan-1993)
Technical Remarks • In regional applications, one-way nesting works very well • Specification of appropriate barotropic fields at the open boundaries is essential for stable computations • Open source community models produce better algorithms over a wide range applications: • Promote collaborative development and testing • Promote higher standards • Complete information transfer; wider usage http://www.ocean-modeling.org/
Future Developments • Coast-wide observing network for NEOS • Embed within operational North Atlantic model • Move to block/unstructured grids
