Authentic German dancing of the Donauschwaben. Megan Dettmering
Everywhere there is dancing; it is an art and part of some cultures. The dancing I am going to focus on today is authentic German dancing of the Donauschwaben. This is one of my hobbies that I know a lot about and enjoy doing. Ich tanze mit der Milwaukee Donauschwaben Jungendgruppe. The reason we have the Milwaukee Donauschwaben and other clubs such as this is to keep the heritage and traditions staying intact.
What is the Donauschwaben? Donauschwaben is a culture, the Donauschwaben are ethnic Germans that lived outside of Germany in the Slavic regions of Eastern Europe for the most part along the Danube River. Besides farming and such work these people danced and sang in their free time. In the 18th century they left what is now southern Germany in search for better lives. They were offered free farm land along the then barren areas of the Danube River. They stayed in these settled areas for years developing entire Donauschwaben villages amongst the native people or locals. While keeping the German language and customs while still adding other things for the soroundingcultures, which created which is the Donauschwaben. This is the Donauschwaben Wappen.
It is important that we keep tradition/traditions running that we have learned from our ancestors. Why should their dancing be important today?
What does this dancing consist of? The dancing consists of polkaing, waltz, and schottische. trying to German dance by yourself is mostly impossible; everything we do is in couples or even three partners for one dance. There is the polka step which is done throughout the dances.
There are MANY different kinds of dresses and outfits we wear. • We have dirndls we wear, that consists of a dress that is sleeveless and has a blouse which you wear underneath, followed by an a apron. • We dance in character shoes which have a slight heel on them and are black and have backs on them to keep to keep them from falling off. • There are also trachts, which are traditional costumes that have strong regional characteristics. • Dresses the women wore were usually worn to be functional or to express her origin or social background. • Men in the Donauschwaben community wear black pants, a white shirt, and a black vest. What do we wear?
