Dancing With the Future A Different Approach to First Nations Education
A Lack of Coherence • Foundation Statements: • Focus on doing what is right • All students can succeed • Dignity, purpose, and hope • The Reality • PAT Acceptable: 81 vs 63% • Drop Out Rate: 6 vs 14% • Completion Rate: 73 vs 66% • Transition Rate: 50 vs 27
What’s Going On? In spite of: • Good intent • Hard work • Resources Success is marginal at best.
The Wrong Question! What can we do to encourage/help Aboriginal people better “fit” into our society?
As a Result… …we focused on the “wrong” problem …and utilized the “wrong” approaches …and, inadvertently, achieved exactly the opposite of what we intended!
Ask a Different Question!!! How can we utilize the resource of public education to better meet the needs of the Aboriginal Community?
Key Elements… • Public Education is a powerful resource • Aboriginal communities are best able to identify their needs • A relationship built on mutual respect
Results • Youth Forum • FNMI Liaison Committee • Revitalized Aboriginal Days • Vision Circle – a “different” approach to discipline • Youth Presentation – The Significant Difference • FNMI Education Centre
Still in the Works • Capturing their “stories” (with David Bouchard) • Certificate in Aboriginal Studies • Youth Forum II • Youth-Adult Forum • Sweat Lodge • Culture Lessons • For youth • Delivered by youth
Best of All… Aboriginal youth are re-engaging with their education
A Final Reflection… • It’s not our differences that divide us. It’s our judgements about each other that do.
