The Buddha Story About 2,500 years ago, a King and his wife, Queen Maya, ruled a small kingdom in the North of India. They had a son and they named him Prince Siddhartha Gautama. He was no ordinary baby. As the years went by, the prince was surrounded with happiness and all lovely things.
One day he decided to search outside the walls of the palace grounds. • There, in the streets, he saw four sights: • A sick man • An old man • A dead man • A monk
These first three sights of the sick man, the old man and the dead man taught him about suffering, sickness, old age and death. These had been hidden from him as he was growing up in the palace. The sight of the monk gave him the idea to become a wandering holy man.
Siddartha then spent many years doing religious practices like fasting, praying and meditating. • He wanted to understand more about life.
Here, under the bodhi tree, Siddartha became BUDDHA, the enlightened one. Finally, he understood the basic truths in life.
He never claimed to be a god. • Had many followers. • He taught the Dharma (path of right living) to free humans from suffering.
He realised that all human beings can attain Nirvana (ultimate bliss) - free from mental pain/confusion. ? Q: What would be Nirvana (ultimate bliss) for you?
