T.C. Knapp ElementaryMr. Boggs’ 3rd Grade ClassWeek of March 10th, 2014 • Dear Families, • Thank you for continuing to push your child in the direction of excellence in their education! The students are truly beginning to shine in class and it is wonderful to watch them all develop into very competent students! • Sincerely, Mr. Boggs • Reading During our reading block, we will continue to work on key skills in reading in preparation for the upcoming spring reading Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA). Although we will not begin a new reading selection this week, the students will still have reading homework throughout the week. This week, I will be sending home activities that will reinforce essential skills the students will see on the upcoming reading OAA. • We will also begin to practice questions found on the new online PARCC assessments, which will be in place next year. Our class has been selected to pilot the new test this year on a trial-run basis. This will be good practice for the real state assessments, but will not hinder your child’s scores. • SpellingThere will be no spelling words sent home this week as we are NOT beginning a new reading selection. • Math: In math this week, we will continue to work in the metric system. The students have already discovered how to use centimeters to measure length. They will also learn how to use grams (g) and kilograms (kg) to measure mass and also how to use milliliters (mL) and liters (L) to measure capacity. The students will have their test over the metric system early next week. Homework will be sent home each day this week reinforcing essential skills taught within the classroom. REMINDER: Although we are learning about the metric system this week, the students are still required to study their math facts each night for 10 minutes until all facts have been mastered. • Science/Social Studies: This week in science, the students will continue to apply their new knowledge of rocks. The students will identify minerals inside of rocks and begin to understand that some of rock’s properties are a result of the minerals found within the rock itself. The students will have a brief quiz over this new material on Thursday, March 13th. A study guide will be sent home throughout the week.
