Poverty in Waushara County – Who is Affected? • Central Wisconsin, rural • In January 2009, unemployment rate was 9% • In 2007, 12.6% of residents (3,120 people) lived below poverty • 2008/2009 school year, 50% of school-aged children eligible for free/reduced lunch
Mission & Definition • Mission: To engage our community in the elimination of poverty • Definition of Poverty: “Poverty is a lack of income or resources to meet the basic needs of life. It is also a lack of opportunities, access, assets, or means to meet physical needs, participate fully in the life of one’s community, or strive to fulfill one’s potential and sense of purpose.”
Purpose/Vision • Purpose/Vision: “Vision 2020 will work to eliminate poverty by building awareness of the causes and conditions of poverty in Waushara County, by educating the community about the impact and complexity of poverty, and by facilitating collaborative action. It is not itself a provider or funder of direct services to the poor.”
Waushara County Vision 2020 Action Steps • Establish and Expand Local Planning Committee • Increase Community Awareness and Network of Citizen Advocates • Develop Local Plan of Action to address poverty in Waushara County
Establish and Expand Local Planning Committee • Established in June 2008 • 6 members on initial coordinating team; now 31 active members • Diverse representation: representatives from Congressman’s office; local Mayor; community members; business, faith, medical, and human service providers; Human Services Board members; non-profit agency reps
Increase Community Awareness and Network of Citizen Advocates • Columns in local weekly newspaper (twice monthly) • Posters • Public speaking • DVD presentations • Promotion of state website: www.2020wi.org
Short-term Action Steps • Family and Community Town Supper • November 2008 • County Board Resolution #49-12-08 (passed in Dec 2008 endorsing state and local efforts to end poverty; appoint county board rep to participate) • Poverty Simulation • January 2009
