NOUNS. A NOUN IS…. A word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. EXAMPLES. In 6 th Grade, we will be studying several different types of nouns: ~ Abstract – Concrete Nouns ~ Proper – Common Nouns ~ Plurals Nouns ~ Possessive Nouns. Concrete & Abstract Nouns.

  2. A NOUN IS… A word that names a person, place, thing, or idea.

  4. In 6th Grade, we will be studying several different types of nouns:~ Abstract – Concrete Nouns~ Proper – Common Nouns~ Plurals Nouns~ Possessive Nouns

  5. Concrete & Abstract Nouns Concrete – Names something that can be seen or touched Abstract – Names an idea, quality, or state of mind. These are nouns that you can not see or touch

  6. All nouns are either common or proper. Common Nouns – a general name for a person, place, thing, or idea. Proper Nouns – a particular name for a person, place, thing, or idea.

  9. A plural noun names more than one person, place, thing, or idea.

  10. In order to spell plural nouns correctly, you must follow the following rules:

  11. RULE #1To make most nouns plural, just add -s • Examples: cake---------- cakes planet--------- planets phone--------- phones

  12. RULE # 2 When the singular noun ends in s, sh, ch, x, or z, add -es. Examples: • Bus --------------- Buses • Fox --------------- Foxes • Ash --------------- Ashes • Couch ---------- Couches

  13. RULE #3 When the singular noun ends in o, add -s. Examples: studios radios stereos **Exceptions- For the following nouns ending in o, add –es: echoes heroes tomatoes potatoes

  14. RULE #4 When the singular noun ends in y with a consonant before it, change the y to i and add -es. Examples: fly ------------- flies penny -------- pennies candy -------- candies

  15. RULE #5 For most nouns ending in f or fe, add -s. For some nouns ending in f or fe, however, change the f to v and add -es or -s. Examples: belief – beliefs loaf - loaves chief – chiefs calf - calves roof – roofs knife - knives

  16. RULE #6 Some nouns are the same when they are both singular and plural. deer trout sheep moose salmon

  17. RULE #7 Some nouns form their plurals in special ways.

  18. The best way to learn how to make singular nouns plural…memorize!!!

  19. Making Nouns Show Possession

  20. A possessive noun shows who or what owns something.

  21. Examples: Here is Ava’s iPod. Who owns the iPod? Ava Please get the workers’ paychecks. Who owns the paychecks? Workers’

  22. More Examples… 1) Tyra’s laughter was infectious. 2) The class’s reports are almost finished. • The puppy carried Mya’storn Ugg in his mouth. ↓ adjective

  23. There are 3 rules to forming possessive nouns.

  24. RULE #1 To make singular nouns show possession, add an apostrophe and an s. Examples: Singular Noun Possessive Noun mechanic mechanic’s Liam Liam’s teacher teacher’s

  25. RULE # 2 To make a plural noun that ends in s show possession, simply add an apostrophe after the s. Examples: Plural Noun Possessive Noun workers workers’ nurses nurses’ teams teams’

  26. RULE #3 To make a plural noun that does not end in sshow possession, add an apostrophe and an s. Examples: Plural Noun Possessive Noun men men’s children children’s women women’s

  27. Just a little side-note… ** Apostrophes have two uses: To replace missing letters or words. Example - can’t = can not To show possession. Example - I like Brenda’s pocket book.
