Concrete & Abstract Nouns Concrete – Names something that can be seen or touched Abstract – Names an idea, quality, or state of mind. These are nouns that you can not see or touch
All nouns are either common or proper. Common Nouns – a general name for a person, place, thing, or idea. Proper Nouns – a particular name for a person, place, thing, or idea.
A plural noun names more than one person, place, thing, or idea.
In order to spell plural nouns correctly, you must follow the following rules:
RULE #1To make most nouns plural, just add -s • Examples: cake---------- cakes planet--------- planets phone--------- phones
RULE # 2 When the singular noun ends in s, sh, ch, x, or z, add -es. Examples: • Bus --------------- Buses • Fox --------------- Foxes • Ash --------------- Ashes • Couch ---------- Couches
RULE #3 When the singular noun ends in o, add -s. Examples: studios radios stereos **Exceptions- For the following nouns ending in o, add –es: echoes heroes tomatoes potatoes
RULE #4 When the singular noun ends in y with a consonant before it, change the y to i and add -es. Examples: fly ------------- flies penny -------- pennies candy -------- candies
RULE #5 For most nouns ending in f or fe, add -s. For some nouns ending in f or fe, however, change the f to v and add -es or -s. Examples: belief – beliefs loaf - loaves chief – chiefs calf - calves roof – roofs knife - knives
RULE #6 Some nouns are the same when they are both singular and plural. deer trout sheep moose salmon
RULE #7 Some nouns form their plurals in special ways.

RULE #1 To make singular nouns show possession, add an apostrophe and an s. Examples: Singular Noun Possessive Noun mechanic mechanic’s Liam Liam’s teacher teacher’s
RULE # 2 To make a plural noun that ends in s show possession, simply add an apostrophe after the s. Examples: Plural Noun Possessive Noun workers workers’ nurses nurses’ teams teams’
RULE #3 To make a plural noun that does not end in sshow possession, add an apostrophe and an s. Examples: Plural Noun Possessive Noun men men’s children children’s women women’s
Just a little side-note… ** Apostrophes have two uses: To replace missing letters or words. Example - can’t = can not To show possession. Example - I like Brenda’s pocket book.
