  1. Romantic Composition Classical to Romanticism

  2. ContrastsMozart Sonata II G MajorvsChopin Fantasie Impromptu • Classical – ‘bubbly’ emotion, Chopin – ‘berserk, angry to calm’ • Rhythm – Cross rhythms in Chopin vs stability and repetition of passages in Mozart • Chopin uses 4 voicings (highly complex) rather than 2 (Mozart) • Big leaps and range in the Chopin piece • Colour wash in Chopin with Pedal vs none in Mozart • Dynamics – crescendos/decrescendos, suggestive (Chopin) vs Stated loud or soft of Mozart

  3. Modulation/Key Changes • We expect to hear the key of a piece change either to; up or down a step/relative minor (6th)/Dominant (5th) or Sub-Dominant (4th)..so In C major we would typically change to either A Minor (6th), G Major (5th) or F major (4th) – occasionally we would go up or down a step (D Major/ Bb Major). • Mozart: In G Major – uses Chord 1 (G Major), 4 (C major) and 5 (D Major)
