Ch. 3 – Pronouns Lesson 2 – Subject Pronouns
Definition • A subject pronoun is used as the subject of a sentence or as a predicate pronoun after a linking verb. • Subject Pronouns • Singular: I, you, he, she, it • Plural: we, you, they
Examples—Pronouns as Subjects • The Apollo program was a great success. It got us to the moon. (It=Apollo program) • You and I both think people should go to Mars.
Example—Predicate Pronouns • The greatest astronauts were they. • Wow! That sounds weird. Why is it “they” instead of “them”? • “Were” is a linking verb. Rearrange the sentence! • Should you say, “Them were the greatest astronauts”? • Nope!! You should say, “They were the greatest astronauts.”
More examples—Predicate Pronouns • The biggest supporters were she and I. • She and I were the biggest supporters. • The first astronaut on Mars will be I. • I will be the first astronaut on Mars.
