Now that you’ve seen two documents about Cortes and the Aztecs, develop three possible explanations for the image below with your partner.
The Conquistadors • Hernan Cortes was an early conquistador • Landed in Mexico in 1519 • Headed inland toward Tenochtitlan • Helped by Malinche, a young Native American women guide • Helped Cortes form alliances against the Aztecs • Moctezuma: sent gifts of gold and silver, but urged Cortes not to come to Tenochtitlan • Cortes arrived and was dazzled by the grandeur of the city
Fall of Tenochtitlan • Moctezuma welcomed Cortes to his capital • Soon relations grew strained • Aztecs drove Spanish from their city • Moctezuma was killed • 1521: Cortes returns and captures/destroys Tenochtitlan • On the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the Spanish build Mexico City

Pizarro in Peru • Francisco Pizarro arrived in Peru in 1532, just after the Incan ruler ATAHUALPA won the thrown after a bloody civil war • Helped by Native American allies, Pizarro captured Atahualpa after slaughtering thousands of his followers • Pizarro demanded a huge ransom for Atahualpa’s return • Incas paid, but Atahualpa was killed • Spain conquered most of the Incan territory
