Agenda • Go over procedures for the class • Go over disclosure statement • Talk about class fee’s • Painting pre-assessment • Exit pass
Procedures for this class • Follow along as we go over the procedures for this class. • You will be tested on your knowledge of these procedures throughout the semester so pay attention and keep your notes. • You will also be required to respond to questions during this presentation.
Course Description • This is an entry-level course for the High School Visual Arts Core Curriculum. • It is designed to provide an overview by introducing students to Painting by studying a variety of Art tools and materials. • This means the point of this class is to show you different techniques and media that you may or may not have used before. • You will be graded on your ability to follow instructions and experiment with different media, not on your ability to create a masterpiece.
Bring A Pencil • Bring a pencil EVERY DAY or leave one in your portfolio you will need it for a grade every day. • Being prepared every day will get you rewarded. • Not being prepared every day will loose you points.
Entering the classroom • Retrieve your portfolio from the drawer that it is assigned to be in. • Go straight to your assigned seat. • Begin working on your daily starter by reading the instruction on the. • You will work on your starter until the teacher instructs you of the transition (times will be posted on the board).
Exiting the classroom • Five minutes before class has ended is clean up time. • The teacher will inform you when clean up can begin, continue to work until then. • Return all supplies to their appropriate place in the room. • Put your work that you are in the process of working on and any supplies that belong to you and you want to stay in the class in your portfolio (unless it is drying). • Put your portfolio back into the drawer matching the first letter of your last name. • Clean desk and area around desk.
Exiting the classroom • Students must stay in their seats until the teacher excuses your table. • If students are out of their seats when the bell rings the class will remain until everyone is seated. • Days requiring an exit slip students will be required to turn in their filled out exit slip before they will be excused.
Participation • Part of your grade is based on participation in class discussion. • This means you are expected to listen and respond to questions during class. • This also means you need to be in class in order to get participation points for the day.
Individual work time • This is the only time you may use electronics and only if the instructor says it is ok. • Music can be listened to as long as you have headphones and at a level where the rest of us can not hear your music. • You may have food during this time only as well, as long as you keep the room clean. • You must be working at all times or these privileges will be revoked.
Course Objectives • By the end of this course, you will be able to: • Assemble and create works of art in multiple forms, manipulate art media, and organize designs with the elements and principle of art. • Find meaning by analyzing , criticizing, and evaluating works of art. • Create meaning in art. • Find meaning in works of art through setting and other modes of learning.
Learning Process: Components for Each Unit • Critiques: • Self and group: An opportunity for students to evaluate their work based off of the rubric and figure out how they can improve as artists. • Main Projects: • Will encompass the whole unit into one art project and be ready to display in the classroom, school, and community. • Mini-Projects: • Mini-projects are used to learn new skills and techniques that students will use for their main project. • Introduction & Homework: • Homework will only be assigned when it is deemed necessary for the assignment. Introductions will be used in bell work and exit passes. • Class Assignments, Credit & Late Work: • Assignments in this course will be both individual and group assignments. All work needs to be done by the due dates issued.
Course Outline • Unit 1: Watercolor resist • Unit 2: Watercolor wash • Unit 3: Speed painting silhouettes • Unit 4: Acrylic self-portrait • Unit 5: Acrylic object observation • Unit 6: Oil painting: Choice
Grading Scale and Point Breakdown • Daily Participation Points = 5 points • Homework = 10-30 points • Daily Bell Work and Exit Pass = 5-10 points • In class assignments = 15 points • Projects = 50 points • Critiques = 15 points • Final or Choice Project = 100 points • Extra Credit Opportunities = Extra art, art contests, and paid art fees
Class Rules & Computers • All rules in your school handbook apply to this class as well, be familiar with them, you will be accountable for all the rules. • The computer in the art room is for looking up images to draw, checking grades, and creating a digital portfolio online.
Guideline #1 • You must always be working!
Guideline #2 • Be prepared for class every day with the supplies you need.
Guideline #3 • Treat everyone and Everything in this room with respect.
Guideline #4 • Follow every instruction the first time that it is given.
Guideline #5 • This Classroom is a “No Whining Zone.” That means that there will be no whining for any reason. Everything that I do is in your best interest, so please respect the “No Whining Zone” this semester.
Disciplinary Action • Cell phone use in class during lecture time or group work time: • 1st offense –teacher reminds student of policy. • 2nd – teacher gives written warning of infraction. • 3rd – teacher writes up student for grouse insubordination and student is sent to an administrator for further disciplinary action to be determined by the administrator. • Inappropriate language: • Deduction of participation points • If the usage is excessive a parent/guardian will be contacted • Unsafe behavior • Sent to another class (Lyon or Zielinski)
Required Materials & Fees • Materials: • Students will need to bring a pencil to class daily for writing in class & daily sketches. • Fees: • Students are required to pay a fee for this course. • $15 – for students or $7 – for students with fee waver

Pre-Assessment • In order for this class to help you improve I need to know where you are and what you know. • You will have 20 minutes to complete an object observation of the objects in the center of the room and answer the questions about art elements.
