CONSEQUENCES OF THE CUBAN MISSILES CRISIS • The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty 1963 (‘Partial Test Ban Treaty’) • This banned the testing of all nuclear weapons, except tests carried out underground. • The treaty did nothing to stop the production of new nuclear weapons or to reduce existing stockpiles of weapons. • Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty 1968 (‘NPT’) • This said that countries possessing nuclear weapons in 1968 (Britain, USA, USSR, France and China) were allowed to keep their nuclear weapons, but not sell or give them to any other countries. They were also not allowed to help other, non-nuclear countries to develop weapons of their own.
