Colonization • The Age of Exploration and Columbus’ discovery of the New World opened up a new market, source of natural resources, and land for settlement for European countries • Even though countries such as England, France and Spain headed in different directions they shared the same 2 goals: • Land • Money

The Road to Revolution • For a long time the British took a hands off approach to running their colonies in North America • Salutary Neglect-policy of limited control over colonial affairs • This approach allowed for colonial industry and governments to form and thrive • Seven Years War(1756-1763)- series of wars between the British and French for colonial possessions in North America • Left the British with the largest empire and a large amount of debt
“No taxation without representation” • New colonial policy- King George III and Parliament decide to impose new taxes on their American colonies • Stamp Act(1765)-requires the purchase of government stamps to put on newspapers, pamphlets, legal documents, playing cards etc. • Townshend Acts(1767)- series of acts that placed taxes on everyday items such as glass, lead, paint, paper and tea • By 1770 tax on all items except for tea had been removed
A Revolutionary Tea Party • The Tea Act(1773)- removes the tax on tea brought in to the American colonies by the British East India Company(British owned trading company) • Hurts American merchants who still have to pay the tax • Boston Tea Party(1773)- American colonists dressed as Native Americans dump tea off a British ship into Boston harbor.
The eve of revolution • Intolerable Acts- meant to punish the people of Boston • Close down Boston Harbor, suspend Massachusetts government, and places large number of British troops in Boston • First Continental Congress(1774)- one delegate from the 13 colonies meet in Philadelphia • Urge colonists to boycott British goods • Urge Parliament and the King to recognize rights of the colonists • Organize training of militia(Minutemen) and storage of weapons in secret locations
The Revolution Begins • “The Shot Heard Round the World” • British troops march out of Boston towards Lexington and Concord • Colonial militia meet the British forces • Colonial forces fire on the British troops at Lexington and the American Revolution had official begun • Colonial forces force the British to turn back and head back to Boston

The Birth of a New nation • Even though the Revolution looks grim at times the colonial forces, led by George Washington, continued fighting • July 4, 1776- the Second Continental Congress approves the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson • Placed a high value on liberty and individual rights • Battle of Yorktown(1781)- British troops surrounded by American Continental Army and French forces- British forced to surrender • The Peace of Paris(1783)- formally ends the war • United States of America is recognized as a separate and independent nation
American Revolutionary Documents • Log into your google classroom account and pull up the “American Revolution Assignment” • On Your Own you are going to read the American Revolutionary Documents (Make sure you annotate before you start answering the questions!!) • You will then work with YOUR TABLE PARTNER to complete the review questions answering in complete sentences.
