What are Orbitals? • Orbital – a 3-D region in an atom where there is a high probability of finding electrons • s orbital – spherical • p Orbital – dumbbell shaped • d Orbital – complex shapes (usually four-leaf clovers)
How Orbitals Work • Each orbital holds a total of 2 electrons, whether it is a s, p, d, or f orbital • Energy level 1 only holds one s orbital, so it can have a max of 2 electrons • EL 2 holds one s orbital and three p orbitals, a total of 8 electrons • EL 3 holds one s, three p, and five d which is a total of 18 electrons • EL 4 holds one s, three p, five d, and seven f which is a total of 32 electrons
Orbitals can only hold 1 electron for each element • When going left to right, each s orbital has 2 elements which is why it only holds 2 electrons • p has 6 elements, so each p orbital can hold 6 electrons, d can hold 10, and f can hold 14

Three-Dimensional Orbitals • Since these are 3-D, that means they are along three different axes – x, y, and z • s orbital is just a sphere around the nucleus (origin) • p orbitals can extend along one of the three axes • d orbitals can go at 45 degree angles or go along one and have a circle around the center which involves the other axis
