  1. I F P S Maximize the Potential

  2. AWIPS Team Concept “Sharing of Knowledge” Separate Focal Points • AWIPS • IFPS • WarnGen With Strong Support from the SOO and ESA

  3. Advantages • Gets more people in the loop • Allows for greater office technical support • Fosters/Encourages communication • Takes the burden off one or two people • Allows for task cross-training

  4. IFPS Implementation Methods • Group Training Session • Goal: Familiarization • Consisted of 3 two hour sessions including slide show and hands-on applications • Emphasis on GFE • Practice Exercises • Goal: Get people working with IFPS • Patterned after NWSTC material • Again, emphasis on GFE

  5. IFPS Implementation Methods • Individual Training Sessions • Goal: IFPS Proficiency • Consisted of 8 hour session • Approximately 4 hours on knobology • Approximately 4 hours preparing forecast • Individual Follow-Up • Goal: Final preparation for implementation • Shadow public forecaster on shift • Hands-off approach – step in only when needed

  6. Additional Training and Tools • Assembling IFPS User’s Guide • Goal: “One Stop Shopping” for forecasters • Consists of material from: • NWSTC • GFESuite Online Table of Contents • Material from SRH Focal Point Course • Locally Prepared Material

  7. Additional Training and Tools • Locally Prepared Materials • Various Word Perfect Files: • Editing Tips • List of individual grids needed • Smart Tool/Procedure Inventory • Explanation/Outline of IFPS steps • FAQ/Troubleshooting Pages

  11. Files Being Provided • GFE/Server Configuration Files • MEG_gfeConfig • localConfig • Procedures • MEG_AllModelLoad • MEG_SmartTools • MEG_SmartTools_TimeGUI • ScratchGrids

  12. Files Being Provided • Smart Tools • HeatIndexTool • MaxT_SmartTool • MinT_SmartTool • PoP_From_Wx • QPF_Assign_SmartTool • Sky_From_PoP • Td_SmartTool • WindChillTool • Wx_SmartTool

  13. Files Being Provided • Text Product Formatters • CCF (7 day version) • RDF (Station/Point version) • RDF_Zones • RDF_Extended (7 day version) • Although RDF format will become standardized, other versions could be run locally to produce additional products (temp tables, fire weather, etc.)

  14. What Process Do We Use to Create Grids? • Edit limited suite of elements • T, Td, Sky, Wx, Wind • Run Smart Tools (or Procedures) • create other grid elements (RH, PoP, MaxT, MinT) based on core elements • Advantages: • Saves Time! • Allows for consistency (ie Wx and PoP)

  15. List of populate procedures • For some procedures to work properly, elements must be lined up temporally (Sky, Wx, PoP)

  16. How Can We Expedite the Process? • Produce all products via GFE • Text, Digital, Graphics • Advantages: • Saves Time! • Easier to Train New Staff • Cuts Out the “Middle Man” (matrices) • Allows for Consistency (at least in theory!) • Product Potential (internal/external apps)

  17. How Can We Expedite the Process? • Produce all products via GFE • Text, Digital, Graphics • Disadvantages: • Formatters Still Need Work (but, they’re getting there!) • Need for “Bells and Whistles” (local effects, wildcards) • Operational Flexibility

  18. Product Generation Menu Setup

  19. Closing Tidbits • Maximize Use of Smart Tools/Procedures • Makes the transition easier on the staff • Easier to write specific instructions/guidelines • Alleviates some “busy work” • Gives forecasters more time to work on the details

  20. Closing Tidbits • Maximize Product Formatter Potential • Explore new and better ways to reach our customers • Make GFE “one stop shopping destination” for all our needs (and requirements) • The potential is limitless, we might as well us it!

  21. Closing Tidbits • Materials Provided • CD with smart tools, procedures, text formatters • CD with Power Point presentation • Disk with various WordPerfect files
