STEM Specifics “It’s a long way to the top if you want to Rock and Roll” – AC/DC • Science • Physics (wave motion, magnetics, frequencies) • Chemistry (finishes) • Technology • CNC, Laser, Electronics, Woodworking, Tool usage (power and hand) • Engineering • Design, analysis (CG), material properties, Ergonomics, IE • Math • Geometry, algebra, logarithms, calculus
So Why does it work? • Easy to relate • Multiple levels of integration (from full blown manufacturing centers to an after school club) • It is Gender neutral • We are even experimenting with nail polish painting! • Students already have interest (easily recognizable) • High success rate for completed guitars 99% (1% just stopped showing up) • Relatively low cost to get started (under $1500 in tools / equipment for a lab)
So Why does it work? • It has many intangibles: • A confidence builder, tactile learning tasks, expands reach of program into music, arts. • Recruiting for the class begins with the guitar lessons instructors on campus and the music department. • Creates a lot of buzz on campus • Campus newspaper, administrators, students all take notice since it is a unique concept applied learning. • Local TV , Newspaper have highlighted the class • Local music shops and Luthier's in your area are willing to assist • It expands the local music community. • There is a network of Schools (Universities, community Colleges, and high Schools) already doing guitar manufacturing and assembly around the US. • We have developed the systems and materials needed for your integration.
How do we use it in classes? • Physics and math dept’s use guitars and string tension gauges in classes • 2 types of class options in MET • No-prerequisite class in exploring manufacturing and guitar building (students customize a pre-made guitar) over 50% are non-ET majors • Mini capstone -Our MET program has a end of year one capstone in design and fabrication
It’s about Applied Learning • In the guitar manufacturing class • No-Prerequisites..Open to all students on campus • Used as a recruiting tool, expose students to a variety of basics skill sets • Safety and tool operation (hand and machines) • Use CAD to design headstock shapes for cutouts • Experience CNC & Laser engraving operations • Learn to read schematic diagrams and solder • Learn a bit of chemistry (finishes) • Get exposure to Physics and Math applications
It’s about Applied Learning • In the end of year one MET capstone class – • Students work on multifunctional teams (in the last 2 years we had graphic art students and Mechanical Engineering Technology students on teams) • They design, market test and analyze designs before production • Apply many of the competencies learned in the first year of classes " Bought a beat up six string in a second hand store. How to Integrate: the first step • Attend a training workshop on STEM applied guitar fabrication (2011 dates) • January 8-13 Las Vegas, NV (Southwest Technical) • June 20-25 College of the Redwoods, Eureka, CA • June 27- July 1 San Diego, CA • July 11-15 Sinclair Community College, Dayton, OH • July 11-15 Butler County Community College, Butler, PA • Tentative Aug 1-Purdue University West Lafayette, IN Team partner applications (one Technology faculty one Math or Science Faculty @www.guitarbuilding.org Registration is available Now!
Many levels of integration • Low level: use a guitar as a learning tool in the classroom (reverse engineer, designs, applied Math and Physics) Curriculum & models are available on guitarbuilding.org • Medium level: Test a sample build of a small quantity of guitars by using a school club or after school project. Sell the guitars at a profit to help purchase tools etc. • High level: Become one of our supply chain partners in manufacturing and applied learning of the guitar tools. Needs a fairly large lab space that can get dusty.

How to get involved • Look for integration opportunities in your curriculum • Check out our Guitar design and Manufacture workbook for STEM activities ready for classroom use • You choose the level of applied learning • Use the curriculum as a stand alone item in the classroom • Integrate through Building guitars • Become a supply chain partner • We sell complete or hardware only kits of the guitars to schools. • if you do not have Mfg capabilities but still want to get involved! • $165 for the guitar kit • $125 for the hardware only
