    2. Serving Crews and Ships In Venturing, units are Venturing Crews or Sea Scout Ships. Being a good unit commissioner for a crew or ship is very similar to being a good unit commissioner for a Cub Scout Pack or Boy Scout Troop—First thing: Know the program!

    3. Know the Program! Exercise Conduct an Ethical Controversy (25 minutes) Learn your position. (5 min) Present your position. (5 min) Discuss the issue. (5 min) Reverse positions. (5 min) Try to reach consensus. (5 min)

    4. Ethical Controversy What does this have to do with “knowing the program?” Venturing Oath: “As a Venturer, I promise to do my duty to God and help strengthen America, to help others, and to seek truth, fairness, and adventure in our world.” Venturing Silver Award Requirement 5: “Participate in the Ethics in Action program, including Ethical Controversies activities and an Ethics Forum.”

Youth Training Update New training progression Crew Officer Briefing and Seminar Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crew (ILSC) Completing ILSC is prerequisite for advanced training Combines old Crew Officer Orientation and VLSC objectives National Youth Leadership Training No longer Boy Scout specific, will be co-ed and program neutral Kodiak, optional preferably after NYLT Kodiak X incorporated into revised Kodiak syllabus NYLT may become prerequisite, but not for several years National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience No longer Boy Scout specific, will be co-ed and program neutral Wood Badge (Venturers 18-20) Still need to be dual registered as an adult elsewhere in Scouting, may change in future

Adult Training Update Current training progression Venturing Leader Fast Start This is Scouting Venturing (Sea Scout) Leader Specific Training Includes Youth Protection Guidelines: Training for Venturing Adults and familiarization with youth Personal Safety Awareness training Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (outdoor program crews) Wood Badge Philmont or Sea Base Leadership Challenge

Adult Training Update New training progression only incorporates changes to existing courses Wood Badge-new presentations on diversity, communications, and generations; provision to include youth Venturers ages 18-20 Philmont Leadership Challenge will be model for NAYLE, courses will be nearly identical Beads-Wood Badge, NYLT, NAYLE and PLC staffs will all be eligible to earn 3 or 4 beads, details in development Youth Protection Training mandatory within past two years. Venturing leaders must have Youth Protection Guidelines: Training for Venturing Adult Leaders

    10. 2013 National Jamboree Plan is to include Venturers as participants at the 2013 National Jamboree The Bechtel Summit site in West Virginia is reportedly being designed to include a Jamboree Venturing sub-camp with access to high adventure facilities Watch for announcements of final plans once 2013 Jamboree registration details are released
