  2. Who funds us? • Commissioned by Essex Waste Prevention Partnership (EWPP) via Essex County Council (ECC) • Part-funded by WRAP • Delivery of project managed by Waste Watch • Operate in Essex only £

  3. Aims: • Aim to reduce organic waste to landfill • Via LFHW message & Home Composting • Volunteer engagement with public: • Volunteer Coordinator will organise & suggest events • Be proactive in terms of saying what you want to do • Suggested 30 hours/year • This is the first session but plan is to have 40 active Waste Busters by 2012 • So if you can also look out for new volunteers …

  4. Why reduce waste? Waste - costs, environmental & social aspects • Who benefits? • How to reduce waste?

  5. Wasteof resources • Water, energy & packaging • Does it make sense to feed and milk cows, make cheese & transport to shops just to throw it away! • More biodegradable waste = more gas emissions from landfill Ethical issues - wasteful behavior can lead to a degraded environment X

  6. Why? To benefit • Everyone in the local and wider community • Lower volume of household waste • Leads to lower landfill tax charges - £40/ tonne – will increase £8/year • Less biodegradable waste • Which lowers cost of collecting rubbish • Which means council tax can be spent elsewhere X

  7. Benefits to volunteers • Helping local community • Help to improve the environment • Membership of Garden Organic • Reasonable travel expenses • Subsistence if working 4 hours or more • Uniform (see next slide!)
