Earth’s Surface Is Shaped By • Chemical Weathering • Physical Weathering • Erosion • Volcanoes • Earthquakes
Chemical Weathering • During chemical weathering , chemicals cause rocks to change into different materials and break down . • Acid rain weathers rock material on Earth’s surface. • Water and warm temperatures are important for chemical weathering .
Physical weathering • In physical weathering , rocks are broken into smaller pieces . • Weeds and other plants can also grow in cracks in rocks . • Glaciers can also cause physical weathering
Erosion • Sometimes the rock stays where it is . • Sometimes it is picked up and carried away to other places . • Erosion = the movement of weathered materials .
Volcanoes • A volcano can rapidly change Earth’s surface • Volcano = a cone shaped landform that forms at a weak spot in Earth’s crust where magma reaches the surface . • The volcano erupts when magma reaches the surface . • Sometimes , the magma oozes upward and flows from the volcano .
Earthquakes • Earth’s outer layer , is on top of another layer called the upper mantle • Fault = a break or crack in rocks where Earth’s crust can move • Earthquake = a sudden movement that causes Earth’s crust to shake • The vibrations of an earthquake move as waves that travel through Earth .
