  1. Advantages of Randomized oils for animal nutrition Manuela Parini

  2. What is “Randomization”? • The randomization a physical process used also for food grade oils. • Part of the saturated fatty acids are shifted from the position 1 & 3 of the triglyceride, to the position 2. • Their digestibility is significantly increased.

  3. Advantages of randomized oils Adapted from W. Smink,Fatty acid digestion and deposition in broiler chickens fed diets containing either native or randomized palm oil. Poultry Science 87 - (2008). Chickens, grower-finisher phase Randomized Stearic Acid Digestion of Palmitic acid % Digestion of Stearic acid, % Randomized Palmitic Acid

  4. Digestion of the Triglycerides. Monoglyceride with the Fatty Acid in pos. 2 Free Fatty acids Palmitic Acid Oleic Acid Glycerol Oleic Acid Lipases Pancreas

  5. Palmit acid in position 1&3 is poorly absorbed MICELLES Palmitic Acid Oleic Acid Calcium Oleic Acid FAECES Bile Salts

  6. Palmitic acid in position 2 forms a monoglyceride Monoglyceridewith Palmitic Acid in pos. 2 Oleic Acid Palmitic Acid Glycerol Oleic Acid Lipases Pancreas

  7. Palmitic Acid in Position 2 forms Micelles and is absorbed MICELLES Palmitic Acid Palmitic Acid isabsorbed Oleic Acid Oleic Acid Bile Salts

  8. Co-randomized palm olein + canola oil 50 |50 Native canola + palm oil 50/50 Weight gain per each litre of ingested feed / kg 0,214 0,192 Advantages of randomized oils Sheila M. Innis, “Formula containing randomised fats with palmitic acid (16:0) in the 2-Position increases in the 2-position of plasma and chylomicron triglyaceride in Formula-fed piglets to levels approaching those of piglets fed Sow’s milk”– Journal of Nutrition 1997 • Sows milk fatty acids contain 20-30% palmitic acid • approxim. 70% is bound to the sn-2 position of the milk triacylglycerol • randomized oils with palmitic acid in pos.2 (33%) in piglets can significantly improve the • weight gain per litre of ingested feed if compared with non-randomized oils Growth performance results at 18 days of piglet fed randomised or non randomised lipid supplement from birth Delta + 11%

  9. Energetic values of crude and randomized oils Calculated according to Wiseman Equation and considering that 33% of saturated FA are placed in pos. 2 in randomized oils
