Fall 2011 CSTAR MeetingA Multiscale Analysis of the Inland Reintensification of Tropical Cyclone Danny (1997) within an Equatorward Jet-Entrance Region Matthew Potter Friday 4 November 2011
Review of NROW-XIII Presentation TC Danny Case Study • Differences between TC Camille and TC Danny • Inland reintensification only occurred with TC Danny • Inland flooding associated with TC Camille occurred in a more favorable environment • Similarities between TC Camille and TC Danny • Interaction with an equatorward entrance region of an upper-level jet • Frontogenesis along a lower-tropospheric baroclinic zone TC Camille Case Study Region of worst flooding
Technology Transfer • Establish a basis for identifying the physical mechanisms that allow a TC to reintensify inland • Allow for identification of possible enhanced precipitation and inland flooding events • Provide additional guidance for issuing high wind warnings/advisories
Future Work • Expand the TC Danny Case Study • Create surface analyses, backward trajectories, plots of heating distribution, time series of metrics following the storm • Determine whether Danny had a MCV structure in its early stages • Investigate causality of the organization of convection • Investigate any effects from the southern Appalachians • Improve the TC Camille Case Study • Use 1.125° ERA-40 datasets • Create similar analyses, plots, maps, and cross sections produced for the TC Danny case
