Code of Practice All Students should:- • Work carefully to minimise risks. • Comply with all safety instructions. • Report all dangerous incidents/accidents. • Ensure proper waste segregation.
Laboratory Safety Rules -1 DO:- • Wear laboratory coats when working in labs • Remove lab coats when you finish working in the lab. • Dispose of waste correctly. • Know the location of the nearest:- • first aid box. • eyewash station. • fire extinguisher.
Laboratory Safety Rules - 2 DO:- • Cover cuts and abrasions with elastoplast. • Wear appropriate gloves. • Keep your work area clean and tidy. • Wash your hands.
Laboratory Safety Rules - 3 DO NOT:- • Eat, drink or apply cosmetics in the lab. • Keep food in any lab fridge. • Use the mobile whilst wearing gloves. • Wear open toed shoes or sandles. • Pipette by mouth. • Keep personal property in the lab.
Fire Alarm Without delay, leave department closing doors and windows behind you. Do not re-enter department until told it is safe to do so
On discovering a fire…. • Inform your lab supervisor, or • Dial 102 if dangerous enough. • Evacuate the building. • Only tackle the fire if it is safe to do so.
Waste Segregation Types of waste • Domestic waste • Clinical waste • Radioactive waste • Chemical waste
Waste Segregation Waste is segregated into coloured bags for disposal. • Clear Bags • Yellow Bags • Blue Bags • Green Bags Also:- • Sharps Boxes • Glass/Aerosol Boxes
Waste Segregation - 1 Clear Bags • Empty containers • Paper waste • Covers and wrappings • Shredded waste HOUSEHOLD WASTE
Waste Segregation - 2 Yellow Bags • Clinical waste • Low level radioactive waste CLINICAL WASTE
Waste Segregation - 3 Blue Bag • Autoclaved waste
Waste Segregation - 4 Green Bags • Human/Animal tissue
Waste Segregation - 5 Sharps Containers • All needles & syringes • Tips for pipettes • Broken glass Contaminated Sharps
Waste Segregation - 6 Glass/Aerosol boxes • Any glass/aerosol • glass bottles must be washed/decontaminated before placing in box (optional clear inner bag to waterproof) DANGER! GLASS AEROSOL WASTE
Chemical Waste - 1 Down Sinks:- • Diluted alcohol • Water miscible solvents • Non-toxic solutions • Approved radioactive waste
Chemical Waste - 2 Waste Uplift:- • Water immiscible chemicals • Highly toxic chemicals • Highly flammable chemicals • Malodorous chemicals • Heavy metals • DNA synthesiser waste
