Problem Statement • To provide uniform and appropriate lighting levels under all types of sky conditions and seasons in an effort to reduce electricity costsassociated with lighting a house. • To provide a solution to the above problem at a reasonable price.
Mission Statement • Create and design a building that will use daylight to effectively light the building in an effort to reduce electrify cost. The building will also not sacrifice temperature changes for daylight. • To develop a lighting system that is aesthetically pleasing to look at and provides efficient lighting to a building.
Design Description • Different day lighting solutions were initially researched. • Breeze way • Energy-Star windows • Normal windows • Light tubes • With diverging lenses • With adjustable shutter to control light intensity • Skylights • Fiber optics
Design Description • Final day lighting solutions were chosen • Light tubes • With diverging lenses • With shutter • Well orientated throughout the structure • Energy Star windows • Breeze Way
Light Tubes • Provide lighting like skylights but appear like recessed lighting inside the building. • Domed design allows light to be collected and directed into the home at all times of the day. • Small surface area on the rough allows for little thermal energy loss. • Adjustable shutters allow for control of light intensity. • Diverging lense disperses light throughout the area being lighted.
Energy Star Windows • Lower heating and cooling costs • Twice as energy efficient as normal windows • Low e-coated glass • Suppresses radiant heat flow
Breeze Way • Introduces addition space to incorporate passive solar lighting
Design Features and Flaws Features Flaws • Energy Efficient • Provides adjustability of light intensity • Affordable • Innovative • Aesthetics • Maintenance
Cost Analysis • Light Tube • $650 per tube • Energy Star window • $200 per window • Breeze Way • Price will vary by size
Conclusion • All three components work together to provide adequate lighting without compromising energy costs • Provides daylight at all lighted hours of the day • Provides customizing of daylight with the implication of fiber optics
