  3. Baeyer’s String Theory • Proposal made in 1885 • Determined stability of carbocyclic compounds • Angle deviation between chemical bonds • Theory later substantially extended

  4. Achievements • Synthesis of plant dye indigo • Discovery of phthalein dyes • Discovery of barbituricacid • Centric formula for benzene

  5. Lend-lease Program • Proposed by Franklin Roosevelt • Passed in March of 1941 • Aid of war materials to allies • Originally intended for British commonwealth countries

  6. Creation of Program • US law required cash payment for purchases • Great Britain could not pay in cash much longer • Act passed to fix problem • Allowed payments by other means

  7. Results Post-War • Fourth countries received had received lend-lease • Overall aid valued at $49,100,000,000 • Much amounted to gifts • Cost offset be reverse-lend-lease

  8. Patrice Lumumba • African nationalist leader • First prime ministerof DRC • movement emphasized its all-Congolese nature

  9. Opposition • Arrested on few accounts • Soviet Union’s support for Lumumba appeared as a threat • Forced out of office during political crisis • Murdered in Katanga, January 17, 1961

  10. Legacy • Proclaimed “national hero” following assassination • Family actively involved in politics • Critics: very few accomplishments • Supporters: pursued policies despite opposing viewpoints
