Some Estimates • There will be 5.3 billion mobile subscriptions by the end of 2010, estimates The International Telecommunication Union (October 2010). That is equivalent to 77 percent of the world population. And is a huge increase from 4.6 billion mobile subscriptions at the end of 2009. • 90 percent of the world now lives in a place with access to a mobile network. For people living in rural communities this is lower at 80 percent. • At the end of 2010 there will be 3.8 billion mobile subscriptions in the developing world – that’s 73 percent of global subscriptions. Three Prominent Deployment Systems Confidential
Biggest Challenges for the Customer • Keeping afoot in technology • Providing a consistent experience to the customer (especially if the content is accessible through browsers) • Finding out what is acceptable (for consumer content) • Deciding on how much to test (do you need functional testing or will a standard certification like Sun certification for a J2ME app suffice?) • How to choose the devices to test on • How to save on your get-to-market time Confidential
Biggest Challenges for the Vendor • Keeping afoot in technology • How to scale resources for such micro projects • Finding out what is acceptable (for consumer content) • Deciding on how much to test (do you need functional testing or will a standard certification like Sun certification for a J2ME app suffice?) • How to choose the devices to test on • How to save on your get-to-market time Confidential
Different Demands in Testing Space Confidential
How to serve multi-geo customers? • Remote testing options • Use device specific simulators/emulators to re-create a similar execution environment • Use remote device systems like Device Anywhere • Physical testing options • In-Country certifications Outside of multiple Geos, these approaches also hold true when dealing with customers requiring specific network conditions 3G/4G. Some remote access systems can help, but in some cases there is no choice but to physically visit the location. In such cases, preparing a succinct certification suite ahead of travel is highly recommended. Confidential
Can we automate testing of mobile applications? Yes…. But to an extent • In the infotainment space, most content has a very short life span (ranging in months to a year at most) • Automation is only feasible (implementation and cost wise) for long running applications, in mobiles, that would limit to enterprise applications (e.g. Mail Clients, Banking Applications, Mobile extensions of larger systems) or stable media systems (e.g. Facebook, MySpace, Orkut) – in simple applications that last long, and need updates frequently without changing the base structure We have tools for mobile automation from Test Quest, Device Anywhere, plus developers are now building mobile extensions for QTP – But this is an avenue you tread after good planning.
