What is Leadership? “ A leader’s dynamic does not come from special powers. It comes from a strong belief in a purpose and a willingness to express that conviction.” Leadership Challenge Kouzes & Posner
Leadership Victoria • Nine- month leadership program that combines skill development with service to the community • An emphasis on how to engage, motivate, inspire, collaborate and initiate transformational change
Our History • Part of an international network • Grew out of the civil rights movement in the US • Following a plane crash in Atlanta in which many community leaders were lost, there was a need to rebuild community leadership
We Have a Focus on the Community • Community defined in a broad sense • Engage leaders from across a variety of sectors • Broadens networking of participants • Develop a sense of social responsibility • More diverse than in-house training • Provides a challenging environment for team projects • The workplace is also a community that requires leadership
Our Current and Past Participants Represent multiple sectors in the Capital Regional District • Government 20% • Corporate 19% • Non-profit 18% • Education 17% • Self-employed 14% & Small Business • Other 12%
We are Developing Leaders Who: • Have an increased appreciation for the issues facing our community, • Understand the critical importance of collaborative leadership and partnerships in our increasingly-complex community • Have developed (or have further developed) skills in analyzing those problems, developing options, fund-raising, communicating, and bringing community partners together
We are Developing Leaders Who: • Know how to tap into a much broader, community-based network, and • Perhaps most importantly, are prepared to do it (on Boards, in committees, or in direct response to a community need).
Course Structure • 25 participants from a variety of backgrounds • Opening weekend retreat (September) • Each student assigned a mentor for the year • Eight day-long themed community learning days (October-May) • Teams of approximately five participants take on Community Action Projects • Graduation Ceremony (June)
The Curriculum • Based on Leadership Challenge (Kouzes and Pozner) • Learn by doing • Enhance self-awareness • Explore leadership theories & models • Accept different learning styles • Collaborate through team experiences • Apply inductive & deductive learning techniques • Acquire transferable skills for work & life
Community Action Projects Goal To make a lasting contribution in the community
Community Action Projects • Four Community Learning Action Projects • Develop & Implement • Completed by small groups of participants in conjunction with an existing community agency.
Community Action Projects Skills Developed • Collaboration • Team development • Participatory decision making Projects | Lab • Skills and knowledge learned in the classroom can be exercised to address community issues.
Project Vital City Ted Harrison | Artist A collaborative painting project completed by nine different community organizations. Outcome The painting reminds us to work together to make Victoria the kind of place that we are proud to call ‘home’.
Urban Rain Garden Goal To create a rain garden at Victoria West School
Impact on Graduates(2008 survey) • 46% have been promoted since taking the course • 52% have changed careers or organizations • 70% have more responsibility for leading others at work • 49% have more responsibility for leading others in the community
