SEMESTER OVERVIEW Tuesday, September 4th- First day of classes- Research & Writing Seminars begin this week-Add/Drop period: September 4th - 17th Wednesday, September 5th - Photos in Barrister’s Hall (LAW Tower, 1st floor), 9AM to 1PM Monday, October 8th- Columbus Day: Classes Suspended Tuesday, October 9th- Substitute Monday schedule of classes Wednesday, November 21st- Substitute Friday schedule of classes Thursday, November 22nd - Friday, November 25th - Thanksgiving Break Thursday, December 6th - Last Day of Classes December 10th – December 21st - Exam period
  6. BOOKLISTS & PRELIMINARY ASSIGNMENTS Some (but not all) Professors post course materials, first class assignments and syllabi on Blackboard- http://blackboard.bu.edu. Textbooks - visit the BU Barnes & Noble Bookstore at Kenmore Square or online at http://bu.bncollege.com/. Introduction to American Law- complete online course on Blackboard
  7. HOW DOES ADD/DROP WORK? Add/Drop period: Tuesday, September 4th through Monday, September 17th. Attend ALL classes you may be interested in taking; you are responsible for ALL assignments and readings during Add/Drop. You must attend the first class meeting for all seminars -- and sign the attendance sheet -- due to enrollment limits. Add/Drop forms are available at OGIP Permission to add a course is granted on a space available basis and Dean Riccardi must approve of all course selection changes. Make all final changes to your schedule by Monday, September 17th.

  9. AUDITING You attend each class but do not take exams or receive grades. Classes may be audited either formally or informally Formally: class will appear on your transcript as AUD (audit). Informally: class will not appear on your transcript. All audited credits count towards the 18 credit/semester limit. Audited credits do NOT count toward the 24 credits required for the LL.M. degree and cannot count towards concentration requirements. Both formal & informal audits require the professor’s consent. If you want to audit a course, ask him or her to sign the Audit Form.

  11. NON-GRADED CREDITS ALP students and full year exchange students may enroll in a maximum of 6 non-graded credits over the entire year. Semester exchange students may enroll in 3 non-graded credits. Non-graded credits include courses taken on a Credit/N0n-Credit/Honors basis, courses taken in other schools within the university outside the law school, and credits for independent papers.
  12. CREDIT/NON-CREDIT/HONORS Can select the C/NC/H grading option unless the course description notes that the Professor does not offer that option (i.e., Corporations). Not available for any first-year courses. Not available for Introduction to American Law or Legal Research & Writing. Cannot change from C/NC/H status to graded status (or vice versa) after the add/drop period has ended.

  14. CROSS REGISTRATION LL.M. and Exchange Students may take classes at Boston University outside the School of Law. Class must be level 500 or above to receive law credit Credit towards the LL.M. degree is limited to 3 credits per course 1 course per semester, unless otherwise permitted by the Director Up to 6 credits for the entire year Grades received for non-LAW classes are recorded on the student's transcript but are not included in the student's average
  15. CROSS REGISTRATION To register for a course outside the law school: Meet with Dean Riccardi or Erin to request permission to take the class Speak with Erin for details about the particular school’s registration procedures

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES Important Tips:  Physical Education courses count towards the 18 credit limit (per semester).  All physical education courses should be audited, not taken for credit.  Supplemental fees may apply for equipmentusage. Team sports opportunities are available! Visit the FitRec website, http://fitrec.bu.edu/

PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES Physical Education Classes are called PDP classes More than one hundred 0.5 to 2.0 credit courses are available View available classes and details at http://www.bu.edu/fitrec/programs/pe/. To register Get a PDP add form (available in the OGIP) Get the instructor to sign it Submit it to the University Registrar’s Office at 881 Commonwealth Avenue

LEGAL RESEARCH & WRITING Will receive section assignments by email on Thursday BU email Monday classes are rescheduled for the first week If you have a class conflict with your scheduled section, please contact Erin (echecka@bu.edu) Required 3 Week Library Research Class beginning September 10th. Each section is assigned a specific time. If you have a conflict, contact David Bachman at dbachman@bu.edu
  20. EXAMSOFT Students may take exams on laptops. Examsoft must first be loaded onto your computer. Deadlines will apply to become registered and approved to use your laptop - - we will keep you informed!

  22. STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION One LL.M. representative to be elected to SGA. In past, Rep has come from American Law Program. Other programs are represented by American Law Rep and can share concerns with that person. SGA/OGIP will send you election details and the SGA Nomination Form

BAR EXAM INFORMATION Each of the 50 states has its own criteria and procedures for admitting lawyers to practice Graduates of foreign law schools are often eligible for the following bar exams: California Washington D.C. Massachusetts New York Because requirements frequently change, seek information from the board of bar examiners of the state in which you wish to take the exam.
  25. NY BAR EXAM Must request an evaluation of eligibility to take the Bar Exam. Complete the online foreign evaluation form (http://www.nybarexam.org/Foreign/ForeignLegalEducationhtm) and submit the supporting documentation specified Eligibility: Need to complete specific coursework during LL.M. studies Timing: for the July 2013 exam, the Board of Law Examiners instructs applicants to submit the request on or before April 2012 MPRE- must pass to be admitted to Bar but don’t need to take it before the bar exam. Test Dates: Nov. 3, 2012; April 6, 2013; August 17, 2013.

MA BAR EXAM To be eligible, must be admitted to the Bar in foreign country Different LL.M. course requirements for graduates of law schools with common-law and civil-law traditions Common Law: Need 15 credit hours in specified subject categories; must take Con Law, Prof Responsibility Civil Law: Need Con Law, Prof Responsibility and at least 1 course from 3 other specified subject categories Must request an evaluation of eligibility to take the Bar Exam Timing: requests must be made at least 4 months prior to applying to sit for the MA Bar Exam.
