Country Science Fairs * What is the status of Science Fairs in your area? • Existing: Please complete if your country has participated in Intel ISEF • How many science fairs are held? 3 national level science fairs (1 MOE, 2 MARA: lower & upper secondary) • How is the community or government involved? MOE & MARA as organizers • Approximately how many students entered this year, (2009-2010 academic year)? • MOE: ~300 projects per year, ~30-35 student finalists at national level • MARA: ~400 students, ~200 projects per year

General Challenges • Lack of awareness/skills among teachers/students of the correct procedure or process of doing research • Lack of funds and financial support from organizations • Lack of time to complete projects • Lack of mentors in certain areas • Lack of awareness among institutions and community on the importance of students performing science research especially in rural/remote areas • Lack of facilities which are related to doing the scientific research • Too much emphasis on academic goals & grades makes students less interested in participating in science projects • Some projects are hurried, inadequate research and experimentation

Educational Environment (MOE) • Number of schools: ~10,000 schools (Primary-Secondary schools) • Number of teachers: ~350,000 teachers • Number of students: ~2 million • Uses national curriculum with Science and Math being taught in English • Division organizes more than 30 science and math co-curriculum programs
Educational Environment (MARA) • Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM)or MARA Junior Science College was established under the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Co-operative Development. The first school was built in 1972 in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. • National Curriculum is used especially in teaching and learning as well as in designing the scheme of work • All Forms 3 and 5 students are required to sit for the Public Examinations. • Currently, there are : • 33 MRSMs (Forms 1 – 5, aged 13 - 17) (4 premier colleges and 29 non premier colleges) • Student population : 400 - 750/MRSM. Total : appr 22,000 students • Teacher population : 50 - 80/MRSM. Total : appr 2,284 teachers
Science Fairs (MOE) • National Science and Engineering Innovation Project Fair is affiliated with Intel ISEF since 2003 • Annual fair is normally organized in different cities in August-September timeframe • Approximately 300 project entries each year from schools and 30-35 finalists • Fair is part of MOE’s science excellence program
Science Fairs (MARA) • The National MRSM Young Scientist Fair or Tunas Scientist is held in July every year. It was initiated in 1985 • Has been affiliated with the Intel ISEF Fair since 2002 • Participants are from 33 MRSMs • Approximately 400 students participated in the national fair of 2008 • SEM (School wide Enrichment Model) is also part of MRSM program under the Talent Development Program. • About 20% of the mini projects are scientific research
