Getting Started • Initial post joint funded SLaM charity + Lewisham Council + NEF [with time] • Concept was to establish time banks within SLaM • But service users said no! Co-production, Time Banking and Mental Health 14th March 2007
The original idea • Run Trust’s day services as time banks • Introduce co-production concepts into community mental health teams • Establish an organisation-wide time bank for the organisation to “pay back” for the work undertaken by volunteers via “no cost” items like room use, emails, typing Get real!
Working from the outside • worked with community groups, churches, credit unions • Supported networks of time banks in two boroughs Working from the inside • Posts, facilities, co-ordination • Raised the concepts at every opportunity • CE + Directors met Edgar! • Used internal bulletins and meetings • Partnership Time Events Co-production, Time Banking and Mental Health 14th March 2007
Where are we now • Increasing the use of co-production in services through the Maudsley Time Bank • Services “play back” that the way forward for social inclusion is via time banking • Co-production is a term used more generally but in mental health services means clinician and service user working together to produce the best of mental health and wellbeing for the service user.
Lessons - development worker • risk averse public sector makes it very hard to respond quickly to changing circumstances • Lack of understanding of one another's cultures and priorities Lessons from me • Once leaders “get” co-production they can be over ambitious! • Co-production and time banking are slippery concepts – they don’t cascade well • But keep trying different routes and progress can be made!
