MARS PATHFINDER BY: ZAK AND KIERAN
What is it?: A robotic U.S. space craft/ vehicle • Purpose: Sent to Mars to explore the surface of the planet • New way to land on a planets surface • Demonstrate a low cost way for planet exploration • Able to deliver a free ranging robot to the surface of a different planet • Retrieve data (Last transmitted data on September 27, 1997) • Designers/Contributors: Mike Malin-Chief Scientist • Shonte Tucker-Spacecraft Thermal Engineer • Rob Manning-System Engineer • astronaut , Guion S. Taught us how to land on other planets • Was a cost efficient project • It used an innovative way to land • Used a parachute to slow down it descent to mars • Also used giant air bags we learned that these methods are effective • Got many samples of rocks, soil and chemicals • Learned wind patterns and about the weather • The rover data suggested mars was once wet and warm Things learned from pathfinder
BENIFITS RISKS Contamination to the sand on mars • Learned lots of data from it • Learned effective methods to deliver vehicles to other planets • Got many pictures of mars MARS PATHFINDER
There is a new Mars mission named Curiosity • It is doing the same thing as the Mars Pathfinder Plans for Future Research
