  1. THE MARS PATHFINDER BY GURINDER SINGH……

  2. What is it and what’s its purpose? • Mars pathfinder known as sojourner(MESUR PATHFINDER) was an American that landed a base station with a robing probe in 1997. It was launched December 4 by Nasa in 1996 its job was to explore the Martian land. The scientific objectives include atmospheric entry science, long-range and close-up surface imaging, with the general objective being to characterize the Martian environment for further exploration. • The spacecraft entered the Martian atmosphere without going into orbit around the planet and landed on Mars with the aid of parachutes, rockets and airbags, taking atmospheric measurements on the way down. • The rover sojourner became the first micro-rover to operate on another planet, analyzing rocks and soils and testing new rover technology for use in future planetary exploration.

  3. 5 Quick facts!!!!!! • Sojourner was active on the surface of Mars for more than 80 days; it analyzed the composition of about a dozen rocks and soil samples. • In 3 months, Sojourner drove ~ 100 meters (about 330 feet) around the landing site. • Sojourner’s top speed was only 0.4 meters per minute, or ~1.2 ft./min. It weighed 11.5 kg (25.4 lbs) and was about the size of a microwave oven. • The rover traveled 12 meters, or about 40 feet, away from the lander and used a radio antenna to transfer its data back to the lander, which then sent the information back to Earth. • Mars Pathfinder landed on Mars July 4, 1997. Pathfinder consisted of a lander and a rover named in honor of Sojourner Truth, the African American abolitionist and champion of women’s rights. The Sojourner name was suggested by a 12-year-old girl in an essay contest sponsored by the Planetary Society.

  4. FUTURE PLANS AND RISKS • Future robotic rovers will explore Mars’ climate history and search for signs of life by collecting, and eventually returning to Earth, rock and soil samples. Sample return missions are likely to occur in the 2010-2020 timeframe.
