TLF (digital) learning objects enable … • active and critical learning • decision-making • experiential learning • experimentation • visualisation • game formats • investigation and inquiry • modelling • problem-solving • research • simulation

Local learning ……… Stephen Heppell talks about now as a ‘learning age’ where we need to ‘build recipes locally to reach a target, using what we know works locally.’ Howcan we adapt digital material to our local educational purposes? How can TLF digital material be integrated into locally effectivelearning sequences?
tlf material as entry point Yr 5 ...all I wanted the kids to be able to do was to say "How do you look after an area - how do you look after the environment? What steps do you take?" I used Old Bernie's Story first to contextualise it - put it up on a data projector like this, sat (the kids) down...Old Bernie talked about his pond and...how there used to be birds here and how there were lots of trees, and these days, it's not looking like it used to. (This) led on to (discussions about) how to fix up Old Bernie's Pond, which was another learning object. In their groups (because kids were in groups to develop their ad campaign) they had to look at three areas, and I just made one of them environmental. So to promote their areas, they'd have to look at an environmental idea. And this...learning object did it, because they could go and fix up Old Bernie's Pond by taking things out - I think one of them was removing Carp from it, putting signs on drains...they'd just click...and the work would happen and the pond would be fixed up and gradually the pond would get better and better. https://www.learningplace.com.au/deliver/content.asp?pid=22456 Accessed 25th November, 2007

‘Digital content has the potential to allow learners to tinker with scenarios making it easier to grasp complex concepts and transfer understandings to practical problems.’ TLF is an initiative of the state, territory and federal governments of Australia and New Zealand.
To change school practice, curriculum goals and materials, assessment policies, and teacher development must shift. Without these changes, a new technology will merely be used to enact traditional practices.
