Connected Decision Making Global Connected Aircraft Summit June 13th, 2019 Nouri Ghazavi
System Wide Information Management (SWIM) SWIM is the Digital data-sharing backbone of ATM with the capability to provide a data collection and single portal to access data/information to support ANSPs and users to access information to support decision making from flight planning, to traffic flow management to situational awareness. Global SWIM objective - SWIM consists of standards, infrastructure and governance enabling the management of ATM related information and its exchange between qualified parties via interoperable services
System Wide Information Management: Update • Replaces unique interfaces with modern standards based data exchange • Leverages a single interface to receive multiple data products • Provides SWIM users access to information without directly connecting to another system • Provides enterprise security for incoming and outgoing data • Establishes Enterprise Help Desk for SWIM operational consumer calls • http://www.faa.gov/nextgen/swim
Who is Using SWIM Today? Airlines (11) Industry (107) Airports, FAA Programs (47) Academia & Research (2) Non FAA Govt. Entities (13)
SWIM Cloud Distribution Services (SCDS) SWIM Cloud Distribution Services is a publicly accessible cloud-based infrastructure dedicated to providing real-time SWIM data to the public Include access to the same publicly available data that is currently offered via the NAS Enterprise Service Gateway (NESG) SWIM implementation.
Why SCDS? Additional Benefits
SWIM Data Distribution 4.3TB Consumed PerDay 130 Million Messages PerDay
SWIM Industry FAA Team (SWIFT) Purpose: • SWIM Industry FAA Team (SWIFT) is a joint government/industry initiative chartered to improving information exchange among aviation community stakeholders, using SWIMservices FAA/Government • Enable access to FAA information, delivered as business services, in forms appropriate for use by NAS stakeholders • Provides information services that promote common situational awareness among participating stakeholders • Distribute processed data to all government agencies and industry Industry partners • NAS stakeholders benefiting from NAS information sharing • Participants having subject matter expertise in airline, airport or FAA operations, processes, procedures and related systems
SWIFT Portal: Engaged User Experience • User Experience: • Access based on user access profile directs content to user needs • Empowered users with self-help features and functions • Access from any device, any where • Key Features: • Automated Provisioning • Subscription Status and Statistics • Integrated Message Viewer • Jumpstart Kit • Seamless Integration • Community features
Connected Aircraft Concept • Enhance flight planning and execution of flight plans • Improve traffic management through dynamic data exchanges • Enable data exchanges utilizing a variety of methodologies in a mixed equipage environment • Alternative means of obtaining aircraft sourced information that can be used for strategic planning and tactical operations “Every aircraft is a node on the network, providing information connectivity and relaying information when needed…a network in the sky in which all aircraft are participants.” —Concept of Operations, NextGen, 2007
Connected Aircraft Concept Focus Areas • Improved Situational Awareness • Improved Collaborative Decision Making • Performance Based Standards for Advisory and Safety Critical Services • Example Applications: • Complex Trajectory Negotiations • Flight Deck Surface CDM • Near Real Time Weather and Aeronautical Information • Digital ATIS
Project Overview • Showcase the integrated utilization of multiple technologies and Trajectory Based Operation capabilities to enable efficient trajectory management of air traffic in the NAS, leveraging a globally Connected Aircraft • The project illustrates the exchange of information between Air Traffic Management (ATM), Flight Operation Center (FOC), and the Connected Aircraft including: • IP Data Link • Future Air Navigation System (FANS) 1/A • Enhanced Flight Deck Technologies • Flight Management Systems (FMS) • Electronic Flight Bags (EFB) • Aircraft Interface Devices (AID)
