  1. The Inquisition By: Anna Epstein, Angela Philips, and Julianna Tirelli

What is the Inquisition? • It was the primary method to fight heresy. • It consisted of a church court that punished any Protestants, practice of witchcraft, and anyone who disobeys church laws. • It was established during the Counter-Reformation and a bad reputation was put on the church that is still seen today as abuse of the church’s power.

What happened during the Inquisition? • They tried any suspected heretics and if they were found guilty, they would be punished by local authorities. • The church tried fighting heresy through Christian Education by creating new religious orders to spread Christian teachings. • They had the help of friars who unlike monks, preached in towns where they lived. This act was considered a great weapon against heresy.

  4. Who was involved in the Inquisition? • The Spanish were involved. It was set up and controlled by Spanish monarchs and was seen as much harsher than the Roman Inquisition. • The Spanish used the Inquisition to force religious uniformity on all. • Also, the very famous philosopher Galileo, was tried for heresy. His theory about the sun-centered solar system went against the church teachings that the Earth was at the center, not the sun. • He was tried before the Roman Inquisition and the books about the theory was added to the Index of Forbidden Books or also known • Related to the time period of the Reformation, Pope Paul III established the Roman Inquisition. Himself and six other cardinals were the original council members.

How does this event show religious disunity? • The Inquisition shows religious disunity because the Catholic church still couldn’t accept some people practicing and studying Protestant beliefs. • They always wanted to be in power and to control what people in Europe believed religiously. • They set up the Inquisition to persecute Protestantism in Italy but outlived it’s purpose so the Italian city-states forced an end to them also ending the right for the church to try heretical crimes
